Early Life and Background

Born in 1942 in Varawatti, Karnataka, Mallikarjun Kharge’s early life was marked by tragedy. In 1948, at the age of seven, he lost his mother and sister to violence by the Razakars (private militia) of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Despite these hardships, he persevered in his education, completing his schooling at Nutan Vidyalaya in Gulbarga.

He went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree from Government College, Gulbarga, and later obtained his law degree from Seth Shankarlal Lahoti Law College. His legal career began as a junior in Justice Shivraj Patil’s office, where he developed a passion for labor rights, representing labor unions in his early practice.
